The ACES Research Center aims to increase awareness of funding opportunities available to counselors and counselor educators. The Center is here to support your success with pursuing grants and submitting competitive proposals. We aim to supplement, not replace, the support you might already receive at your universities. We can assist with every phase of a grant proposal, and even serve as an evaluator on your grants!
Our Grant Experts
Dr. Dodie Limberg
Ph.D.
Professor of Counselor Education, University of South Carolina
Grant Development
Dr. Limberg will provide consultation on various components within grant proposals and offer suggestions to help researchers successfully submit their proposals.
Dr. Limberg is an expert in grant writing and development, and has been awarded over $47 million grant dollars to support her current projects focused on the school counselor’s role in career development, supporting students with emotional behavioral disorders, and counselor education doctoral students’ research identity development. Dr. Limberg can provide assistance with generating ideas for projects that might fit an RFP, refining the wording of various components of a grant proposal, and mapping out budget items and timelines.
Dr. Gerta Bardhoshi
Ph.D.
Professor of School Counseling, University of Iowa
Grant Development
Dr. Bardhoshi will provide support in a project based format, meeting with grant teams to understand and develop their evaluation plans.
Dr. Bardhoshi is an expert in grant writing and development and has over $20 million in competitive external funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the Institute of Education Sciences, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Dr. Bardhoshi brings particular expertise in program evaluation planning and research design across education, mental health, and health sciences proposals, and her role within the Center is to provide grant teams thorough support on the evaluation
component of their grant proposals.

The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention
The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention announces their RFPs usually in June or July, and they typically have multiple grant opportunities that connect with what we do as counselors and counselor educators. Proposal deadlines are usually in November
The Spencer Foundation
The Spencer Foundation has multiple grant opportunities throughout the year. Currently, there are two active RFPs and check back regularly.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
SAMSHA regularly puts out RFPs for funding opportunities.
National Collegiate Athletic Association
The NCAA provides opportunities for researchers to get funding for projects with student-athletes. RFPs are typically shared late fall, with deadline of early January.
National Alliance for Children’s Grief
The National Alliance for Children’s Grief offers grants, with RFPs typically being shared early summer and due in July.
